Julian Carl Baldry
June 29, 1948 - March 18, 2009
Julian was born at Toby Hospital, Wareham, Massachusetts to Maxine Urann Baldry and John Maurice Baldry and then raised in Hastings, England. In his youth, he was active in the local sea cadets, which fermented his lifelong love of the sea. He attended Hastings Grammar School, where he developed a fascination with chemistry and became well known to the local fire brigade. On graduation, he studied as a mining engineer and general prankster at the Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall, where he also played top-level rugby. Always in search of adventure, Julian moved across the pond upon completion of his degree in 1971.
He landed in upstate New York where he worked as a mine labourer for several years, ultimately traveling to Idaho as general foreman of the Bunker Hill mine. His practical expertise led him to work in Montreal for Atlas Copco as a technical specialist and national marketing manager. There, he met his first wife, Judith MacMillan, and they had their first child, Francesca Lesley. Julian subsequently returned to Idaho as the manger of mining operations for the Coeur d'Alene mines. Judith and Julian then had their second child, Andrew Fraser.
Julian returned to Canada to foster alternative applications of his practical experience in the financial world. His investment career began in Vancouver, soon leading him to Nesbitt Thompson in Toronto (now BMO Nesbitt Burns), the mining investment branch of the Bank of Montreal. His work there placed him among Canada's top-ranked metals analysts for over ten years, until he left the organization in 1998. In that time, he nurtured many friendships across Bay St. and greatly enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction of the job, as well as the camaraderie of his fellows. Julian subsequently traveled the world with his family, always stopping to smell the jasmine, and explored many multiple side ventures and investments. Never one to stay away from mining for long, he joined Octagon Capital, where he mentored analysts young and old in his own inimitable manner.
Julian married Loretta Mattiazzo in 2007, remaining with her to the end. Julian is survived by his loving wife, Loretta; his son Fraser of Toronto; his daughter Francesca (Chessa) of Chicago; his brother, John Marcus Baldry and sister-in- law Joan Lamb, of Olympia, Washington; and his sister Isabel Eileen Gill (neé Baldry) of Tonbridge, Kent.
